Coincidence of Opposites

Fifteenth century Cardinal, Mathematician, and Mystic Nicholas Cussnus has been referred to as the first modern philosopher. He theorized coincidentia oppositorium, or coincidence of opposite constitutes the least imperfect name for God, and was the means by which humanity could achieve religious tolerance and ultimately world peace. Also called Nicholas of Cusa, he was known for his deeply mystical writings about Christianity, particularly on the possibility of knowing God with the divine human mind, which is not possible thru mere human means but via learned ignorance. His work later influenced other Western scholars, most notably Carl Jung, the father of analytical psychology. He considered the psyche of each individual to be coincidence of opposites...a blending of conscious and unconscious elements which together create the "whole" self. Carl Jung held that there is a non-rational instinctive human function, which he termed the "transcendent function" which mediates and combines opposites thru the production of fantasies and symbols. This enables the individual to gain a new perspective, and a more encompassing and rewarding attitude toward what he used to regard an unsolvable conflict. Jung believed that transcendent function involves a combination of conscious and unconscious elements who go far beyond and are opaque to thought and reason. He regarded coincidence of opposites to be constructive of both God and Self. The new God he speaks of in the "Red Book" develops through the reconciliation of opposites in the minds and souls of individual men and women. This is the identity of God and Self archetypes. According to Jung, one only achieves "presentment of the whole" and can only achieve balance by nurturing his or her opposite.
